Toxicity
Not all algal blooms are toxic, but research indicates that a growing number are.
The toxins can be:
Neurotoxins -
This can eventually disrupt or even kill neurons, key cells that transmit and process signals in the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
Peptide Hepatotoxins -
These can cause serious damage to the liver.
Dermatotoxins -
These can cause skin irritations and respiratory issues.
You do not have to swim in the water to be harmed by the toxins. You can inhale the toxins.
