Why is the green goop that floats on top of the water in some lakes a problem?

Because it can decrease biodiversity and support invasive species by limiting the sunlight available to bottom-dwelling organisms and cause wide swings in the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water.

Because it can be toxic to humans and pets.

Because it can contribute to climate change.

Because it can stink.

What are factors that can contribute to green lakes?

Fertilizer runoff from lawns and golf courses.

Pumping of water through nutrient rich soil, like peat soil, that pulls out the nutrients and dumps them in the lake.

Stagnant water that doesn’t have enough new water moving through it.

Low water levels resulting in a more concentrated solution in the lake.

Warmer weather and a longer growing season.

How would the 9 Hole Plan help?

The 9 Hole Plan would reduce the need for pumping and for golf course fertilizer. The plan would also restore wetlands which would help filter out excess nutrients.

What can I do to help?

Contact the Park Board commissioners and ask them to pass the 9 Hole Plan.
